Happy Last Day of School-IA Questions in Google Classroom

Happy Last Day of School-IA Questions

Pt.2
The other requirement I have from you is your internal assessment where you are going to be required to create and perform your own science experiment from start to finish. You should be completing this throughout the summer and only one person can work on one type of question. So, if multiple people wanted to do the same question, I couldn't allow it. There are NO groups for this. This is an individual project. Once I approve your question you can begin your project.

Here is a Google sheet where you can put your question(s) that you are thinking about for your IA.

Reminder: This will be submitted to IB and used to evaluate you for your eligibility for your diploma or certificate. With the seniors this year they ONLY used these for their evaluation. So, you should consider this as important as the IB tests you take next year (if we take them).

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Due:

Group 4-Intro and Data Collection in Google Classroom

Group 4-Intro and Data Collection

There are going to be a couple of things that we are doing this week. You will be submitting your introduction and the data that you have collected.

You will submit both things to this post. Make sure everyone's name are on the assignments.

To Do:
-Write a draft of your introduction (Due 4/24)
-Collect data for your country and put it in a Google sheet (Due 4/24)
Created: Thursday, May 7 8:00 PM

Due:

Group 4- Intro/Procedure Lecture in Google Classroom

Group 4- Intro/Procedure Lecture

Alright, here is a lecture that gives you the basis of the Group 4. You get to see the most awkward lecture EVER. Even more awkward than my 2nd period lectures when you all don't laugh at my jokes (actually, this might be very similar...).

Here are some points of clarification:
1. The country that you signed up for is the group that I am referring to in this lecture
2. We will all be working on one research question
3. We will all have one hypothesis
4. Each group will submit one lab report with the data of their country (in addition to the class data that we will work on later)

To do list:
1. You should have a country chosen by 4/13
2. You should download the data from: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports
(download the data from every Monday. For example: Jan. 20th, Jan. 27th, Feb. 3rd, etc...)
3. You must submit 3 possible research questions by 4/15 on the Google sheet attached (I have also attached a guide on where to find the research question section of the Google sheet)

You can see the example of an IA (which is going to be the same format as your Group 4). This example is not perfect so I have attached my scores and notes as well.

Group 4 Project Sign Up: COVID-19 in Google Classroom

Group 4 Project Sign Up: COVID-19

Hello Everyone!
I am posting this spreadsheet so you can sign up for a country for the group 4 project. You are going to sign up for one country. You can sign up BY YOURSELF or with a group. Your group can be between 2-4 people. NO MORE THAN 4 PEOPLE PER COUNTRY.

NO EXCEPTIONS

When you are choosing your groups you can sign up with any of the students from either class.

A WORD OF CAUTION: this project counts towards your IB diploma. These scores can be the deciding factor between getting the diploma and not. So, if you choose your friends MAKE SURE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE.

I have chosen countries in a ratio that is indicative to their ratio in the world. The countries I have chosen also have an array of resources available to them as well as number of cases of COVID-19. This will be considered our experiment. So, for an experiment we have to have a question we are investigating. Think about questions you would like to investigate using the data from this website: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports

From this website you should download the data from every Monday. For example: Jan. 20th, Jan. 27th, Feb. 3rd, etc... This is where you will get the information about your country. You might also want to do research on your country to figure out where it is, what resources they have, number of hospitals, and their response to COVID-19 thus far.

I will have office hours on Monday from 1-3pm if you would like to chat with me. Just let me know and we can set something up. And, as always, if you have any questions please let me know!

To do list:
1. Pick a country
2. Sign up with your group on the Google sheet (1-4 people)
3. Research your country (GDP, number of people, number of hospitals, and their responses to COVID-19 thus far)
4. Think of a research question that you might want to investigate for this experiment

Week 2-Here we go! in Google Classroom

Week 2-Here we go!

First, I made a Nearpod for the beginning of Natural selection. The audio did not overlay on the slide so you will just have to sit and listen to me talk (and listen to my dogs playing in the background... they have no respect for a person working from home).

I want you to remember that although these assignments are not going to be graded, this information is your responsibility to obtain because this information will be on your IB exams. I am going to go over some of this when we get back, but with how much time we are losing I am not sure how in depth we will be able to go over this.

Alrigh, so here are some notes!

Natural Selection and Evolution in Google Classroom

Natural Selection and Evolution

So, there is s a simulation that you can do that shows natural selection. It does, however, require flash. If you are doing these assignments on your phone, you will not be able to access them, but if you're using a computer you might. These are fun and you might want to try them.

If you cannot access them, I have made my FIRST screencast that you can follow along with. You will be responsible for recording my data (if you do not do this on your own) and creating an explanation.

1.) Watch the video: Evolution of the Peppered Moth. This will provide context to the simulation that I am going to be showing (or you can do yourself).
2.) Go to the link http://peppermoths.weebly.com/ and see if you can try the simulation yourself. If you can't that's fine, just follow along in the video that I posted
3.) Watch the Pre Industrial Revolution Simulation video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fh4bjOMUtNTpaL-U2Z2ORBvWhnKINdGz/view (if you can hear me whisper to my dog 'can you stop...' when he won't stop scratching himself- you get a bit of comic relief).
4.) Copy down my data into a Google sheet so you can create graphs from them
5.) Watch the Post Industrial Revolution Simulation video and copy the data down to make a graph

Your responsibility here is two fold:
1.) You need to make a graph for the pre-industrial forest and post-industrial forest
2.) You then need to write a conclusion about the data you analyzed and answer the question: How did the industrial revolution cause the population of peppered moths to evolve?

Mitosis Lab: Investigating Mitotic Index and how it relates to cancer in Google Classroom

Mitosis Lab: Investigating Mitotic Index and how it relates to cancer

We are going to be using the procedures that we investigated in Monday's article. The PURPOSE of today's lab is to calculate mitotic index to determine if a tissue sample is gowing (onion root tip slide) or is cancerous (human tissue sample).

You should read through the procedure on the first attachment. Make sure you are able to locate the meristem on the image as well as on your onion root tip slide. When you're finished reading the procedures: one person from each pair should grab a microscope and one person should grab a slide from the font desk.

One peson should count the cells while the other records the number on the Google sheet that is attached to this post. You will need to make your own copy in order to edit it.

Make sure you understand what is happening because we will be writing a conclusion based on the data that you collected.

Assignments for 12/2/18 and 12/3/18 in Google Classroom

Assignments for 12/2/18 and 12/3/18

Good Morning Everyone,

I will not be in class today or tomorrow. NO this does not mean these are free days. I hurt my back yesterday and I think my old age is catching up to me (no old people jokes, Filiberto).

With that being said, I am going to give you the assignments here since there will be two different subs for the two days.

12/2/18 ASSIGNMENT:
You will read through the osmolarity and tonicity. Read through the instructions, they tell you what you should annotate for. At the end of the reading, you should answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper. You should keep these because I'm not sure if the sub will lose them or not.

12/3/18 ASSIGNMENT:
You should complete the worksheet with the understanding you gained form the reading.

This information will be used for the lab we are going to do in class so try your best! And if you are absent, this means you have no excuse not to do the assignment.

Conclusion Writing in Google Classroom

Conclusion Writing

This IA has haunted me for years. When I read this IA many years ago I cannot tell you the emotional roller coaster I was on. The beginning was great, the middle was good and then.... they just didn't write a very good conclusion. I will tell you that I had a stern talk with this student. So, in order to help me get closure for this particular IA I would like for you to write a full point conclusion.

Take time to skim through the introduction and data in order to familiarize yourself with the experiment and then synthesize that information in the conclusion. You can take parts of their conclusion and expand on them, but there is not enough in order for the conclusion to get full marks.

Good luck!

Introduction in Google Classroom

Introduction

Since we will be spending the next two years together I make it a point to try and get to know you in order to inform my instruction. The way that I learn the most is by you introducing yourself to me and telling me what I need to know in order to teach you best. This assignment will be how you are going to do that.

For this assignment I will ask you to tell me about yourself. It does not matter the format in which you introduce yourself. You can write a song, make a poster, a photo collage, letter or PowerPoint, the choice is yours. There are some required aspects that I would like for you to include:
1. Please include your personality type from the 16 personalities quiz
2. Include your weaknesses, strengths, possible future careers, workplace habits (subordinate)
3. include whether you agree with these or not and why
4. Your learning styles based on the learning style quiz you took
5. Anything that you might think is relevant in order for me to teach you best
6. Anything that is important to you (favorite colors, sports team(s), sibling etc...

If you have any questions please feel free to let me know!

Learning Styles Assessment and 16 Personality Quiz in Google Classroom

Learning Styles Assessment and 16 Personality Quiz

This will be your first part of your first assignment. These two quizzes are important to inform my instruction.

Learning Style:
I have learned over the years that knowing your learning styles empowers you as a learner. It allows you to modify your education to best support you, but I also know that most students do not know their learning style. This quiz (https://www.webtools.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/) will help you learn how you learn best. Here's what you need to do for this part:
1.) Complete this quiz in its entirety
2.) Take a screenshot of your results
3.) Put the screenshot in a Google doc

Personality Quiz:
Since we will be together for two years, this quiz (https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test) helps me when I know how to approach conflicts with you and how you work best with people. When I did this it taught me a lot about myself and I have been able to advocate for myself more. Here's what you need to do for this part:
1.) Complete this quiz in its entirety
2.) Take a screenshot of the summary
3.) Put the screenshot in the same Google doc as the personality test results

You should submit the Google doc to this post by Thursday. If you have any questions please feel free to email me!
