Student Absence Guidance

Valid Reasons for Student Absence

CPS recognizes six reasons for an absence to be considered excused: 

  • Sounding taps at a military funeral for a deceased veteran
  • Parent or legal guardian is an active duty member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone
  • Student illness
    • This includes mental or behavioral health (As of January 1, 2022, absences can be attributed to mental or behavioral health for up to five days based on Public Act 102-0321. Learn more here: (ENGLISH | SPANISH)
  • Observance of a religious holiday (absence note required)
  • Death in the immediate family
  • Family emergency
  • Circumstances which cause reasonable concern to the parent for their child's safety or health (must be approved by the principal)
  • Other situations beyond the control of the student (as determined by principal)

The parent must call the attendance office to report an absence and provide a note when the student returns to school. The note should include the name of the student, division number, date and reason for the absence and a current phone number. PARENTS SHOULD CALL THE SCHOOL AT (773) 535-2200 EXT. 2-6495 FOR SPANISH OR (773) 535-2200 EXT. 2-6496 FOR ENGLISH AFTER 6A.M.  IF NO ONE ANSWERS, PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE. 

Does a classmate or friend have an alarming change in behavior or is talking about suicide?

  • During school hours, notify the main office, a counselor, or administrator immediately.
  • After school hours (after 4pm on school days, weekends, holidays), call the CPS Student Safety Hotline:  773-553-3335.
  • You can notify for all CPS students, not just Hubbard HS students.
  • Please don't email Hubbard staff when school is closed.  Call the hotline for immediate response to best respond to the crisis. Then please alert an administrator or counselor of the call. 
  • For anyone struggling with thoughts of suicide, know that you are not alone and there are immediate resources available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential services 24/7.

Razones válidas para la ausencia del estudiante

CPS reconoce seis razones para que una ausencia se considere justificada: 

  • Se escuchan toques de tambor en un funeral militar por un veterano fallecido
  • El padre o tutor legal es un miembro en servicio activo de los servicios uniformados y ha sido llamado a cumplir con su deber, está de licencia o ha regresado inmediatamente de un despliegue en una zona de combate.
  • Enfermedad del estudiante
    • Esto incluye problemas de salud mental o conductual (a partir del 1 de enero de 2022, las ausencias se pueden atribuir a problemas de salud mental o conductual por hasta cinco días según la Ley Pública 102-0321. Obtenga más información aquí: ( INGLÉS | ESPAÑOL )
  • Observancia de una festividad religiosa (se requiere justificante de ausencia)
  • Muerte en la familia inmediata
  • Emergencia familiar
  • Circunstancias que generan una preocupación razonable para los padres por la seguridad o la salud de su hijo (deben ser aprobadas por el director)
  • Otras situaciones fuera del control del estudiante (según lo determine el director)

Los padres deben llamar a la oficina de asistencia para informar una ausencia y proporcionar una nota cuando el estudiante regrese a la escuela. La nota debe incluir el nombre del estudiante, número de división, fecha y motivo de la ausencia y un número de teléfono actual. LOS PADRES DEBEN LLAMAR A LA ESCUELA AL (773) 535-2200 EXT. 2-6495 PARA ESPAÑOL O (773) 535-2200 EXT. 2-6496 PARA INGLÉS DESPUÉS DE LAS 6 A.M.  SI NADIE RESPONDE POR FAVOR DEJE UN MENSAJE.

¿Un compañero de clase o un amigo tiene un cambio de comportamiento alarmante o está hablando de suicidio?

    • Durante el horario escolar, notifique inmediatamente a la oficina principal, a un consejero o al administrador.
  • Después del horario escolar (después de las 4 p. m. en días escolares, fines de semana y días festivos), llame a la línea directa de seguridad estudiantil de CPS: 773-553-3335.
  • Puede notificar a todos los estudiantes de CPS, no solo a los estudiantes de Hubbard HS.
  • Por favor no envíe correos electrónicos al personal de Hubbard cuando la escuela esté cerrada.  Llame a la línea directa para obtener una respuesta inmediata para responder mejor a la crisis. Luego, avise a un administrador o consejero de la llamada. 
  • Cualquiera que tenga pensamientos suicidas debe saber que no está solo y que hay recursos inmediatos disponibles. La Línea Nacional de Prevención del Suicidio brinda servicios gratuitos y confidenciales las 24 horas, los 7 días de la semana.
