Honors Pre Calculus (Period 4)

Course Description

H Pre Calculus brings math to life with many real-life applications. All students are encouraged to make connections between the mathematics and the world through exploration of the key aspects of H Pre Calculus – functions, trigonometry and the use of a graphing calculator. The mathematics studied in HPre Calculus is used in numerous careers. Along with learning the content of the course, an emphasis is placed on increasing the student’s awareness of its many uses. By the end of this course, students will have a complete understanding of functions – linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic. They will have a firm grasp of trigonometry from the two perspectives, right triangle and unit circle, as well as the numerous identities, formulas and laws associated with trig.

Each class will emphasize the importance of vocabulary development, practicality to the real world, and an understanding of how to approach the problems. These will be brought about through lecture, hands-on activities, group work and presentations. Each chapter will consist of a test, a minimum of one quiz, warm-ups, class work, homework and homework quizzes.

Honors Pre Calculus begins with a complete review of Algebra 2 followed by the study of trigonometry. Although trigonometry was briefly introduced in geometry, in this class we will do an in-depth study which is needed for Calculus.

Honors Pre Calculus is designed for students planning to take Calculus. This course, while maintaining strict, traditional mathematical content, will incorporate technology. Through the use of technology, the student will learn to recognize patterns, visualize, explore, model and connect mathematics to various disciplines.
