This will be our final review assignment for Rhetorical Analysis before the AP exam. This can be a difficult assignment, but if you take your time with it, I think that it will really help you understand Rhetorical Analysis.

Here are some tips:
- READ the speech SEVERAL TIMES - it is a very short speech, but possibly one of the most complex texts that I have given you all year.
- There is a lot more to this speech than what is on the surface
- Consider doings some background research on the speaker (this will help you understand the context of the speech)
- Be specific in your answers
- Email me with any questions - keep in mind though, there is only so much help I can offer through email. You are expected to try and problem solve some of this stuff on your own. I won't give you the "answers", but I will help steer you in the right direction based upon what your thoughts are
- DO NOT DOUBT YOURSELF - There is more than one way to Rhetorically Analyze a text
- This is a difficult assignment and as such, can not be completed in one day - it should take several hours and I strongly recommend that you work on it throughout the week. If we were in class, I would give this assignment over the course of an entire week. If you complete it in a couple of hours - I guarantee that you can go back and add more to it.
The assignment this week is unique in the sense that it asks you to perform a Rhetorical Analysis of a video that was created by Shanded Escobar (YAY 4th PERIOD!!!).

Shanded created this video at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic that we are currently in. He shared the video with me and asked for my thoughts/suggestions. I think it is well done and sends a message that presents one view point of the current situation we are in. I would like you do the following:

- Watch the video (it is only about 8 minutes)
- Watch it several times if you need to - there is a lot there that you WILL NOT be able to get the first time watching it
- Complete the SOAPS Graphic Organizer
- Write a response in which you address the following: "Which Rhetorical Appeal (Ethos, Pathos, or Logos) does Shanded primarily appeal to? How does the use of Rhetorical Appeals enhance the Subject and Purpose of his video?"

You should provide at least two specific examples of rhetorical appeals that are used and make sure to fully explain the connections between the appeals and the intended Subject and Purpose.

There is no specific requirement to the length - However, I think to fully analyze this piece and appropriately respond to what I am asking, your response should be between 3 - 4 paragraphs.

Please have fun with this assignment and again, a special THANK YOU to Shanded for being creative and taking the time to work on this.

Read through Act 1 of "The Crucible" and complete a Double Entry Journal.

Remember, the focus of the journal is to analyze the use of language and how character manipulate the language to accomplish their purpose. To successfully complete this assignment, you MUST perform a close reading of the play (a quick read or reading a summary online will not help you).

I will be looking at the quality of the analysis that you perform and that will help me determine if you read the play or not. Please look at the example that I uploaded on the Google Classroom board.
Open up the Google Slides presentation to read the quote and begin thinking about your journal response. Remember to follow the format that we discussed in class. Your response should be typed as a Google Doc and submitted through Google Classroom (I will not accept handwritten or printed copies). If you have any questions refer back to the assignment handout that we discussed in class or check the rubric.

Remember to avoid plagiarism. Any work that you reference should be properly cited or sourced.

After reading the last few Assertion Journal entries, I have noticed that some of you are leaving off a part of the assignment. Specifically, the argument portion. Remember, aside from analyzing the quote, you are also required to DEFEND, CHALLENGE, or QUALIFY the statement. I will be looking heavily at this portion of the assignment since we have now officially covered argument in class. If you do not address the argument portion of the assignment it will heavily reflect on the grade that you get.

And in case you are wondering... yes, I will be reading through each of these entries and offering individual comments and critiques of your writing (unlike the last journal entry).

The final assignment for Columbine is an argument analysis essay. We will go over the prompt in class and discuss any questions that you may have.

Remember, all arguments are required to have a Claim/Thesis, and sufficient evidence to support that claim/thesis.

We are also working on the timing of your writing. As such, you will have the class period to brainstorm ideas for your essay, but you have a limited time to work on this essay. All due dates are non-negotiable.
